Mike Patterson Signs with Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles signed their number one pick in the 2005 draft, defensive tackle Mike Patterson, to a five year deal. The package included a reported $4 million signing bonus. There had been fears that Patterson would hold out of camp.
The Eagles like Patterson a lot and they see in him a rare opportunity to get significant playing time out of a rookie and to add to their depth at DT. That’s especialy the case if Corey Simon, who is officially holding out of camp, turns up out of shape like he did last year. Simon is refusing to sign a one year contract because he wants to see a longer term committment from the Eagles and wants a big signing bonus.
Regarding Patterson, defensive coordinator Jim Johnson remarked”I see great quickness.I see a kid who wants to be coached. You can’t coach him enough. He’s become a very good technique player.”
The only players waiting to be signed at this point are 2nd round picks Matt McCoy and Reggie Brown. Neither is expected to be an immediate starter, though McCoy could make an impact on special teams.
