Naming the Rookies
The Phillies have two excellent rookies this year who have so far performed above expectations. Each of them has a walk off homer…talk about triumphing over first year jitters. So these guys are going to be part of our team for the forseeable future, which means we’ve gotta have good nicknames for them. Fortunately, Tom G over at Balls, Sticks and Stuff has given us what I consider to be one of the best sports nicknames of all time, Chase Clutchly for rookie second baseman Chase Utley. The name is well deserved as Utley literally has nerves of steel.
Ok. So much for the easy task. Now on to Ryan Howard and the “elusive nickname”.
Enrico over at the700level.com has started the search for Ryan Howard nicknames. Finding rhymes for Howard is no easy task (just look at the nicknames people tried to come up with for Howard Dean in the 2004 race). Ryan isn’t any easier. But we’ve got get this right. So screw the embarassment, let’s start taking stabs in the dark until we get it right:
Ryan “Powered” Howard
Ryan “Pumped and Powered” Howard
Ryan “Powered”
Ryan “I ain’t no coward” Howard
Ryan “Flower Power” Howard (this is a joke of course)
Ryan “Dour and Sour” Howard (now this is getting lame)
Ryan “Sour Coward” Howard (alright, I’m done for now…nicknames shouldn’t insult!)
