Lance Armstrong, It’s been great

Early Lance

It’s been a privilege to have witnessed two of the greatest athletes of all time in my generation. Michael Jordan elevated basketball to a new level, on and off the court. Then Lance Armstrong came along and did the same for cycling. There was a point in my life when I would have said “Cycling, that’s not a sport.” But oh how I was wrong. Lance Armstrong made it possible to enjoy watching people cycle on the television. Kudos.

I have to say that I’ve watched nary a second of Lance Armstrong in action. And I do indeed feel like I’ve missed out on history-in-the-making.

I think it was the consistent level of dominance that really drew me towards Lance Armstrong. Mere athleticism doesn’t impress me. It’s that extra ingredient that takes a great athelete into the stratosphere of excellence, so that is almost unthinkable that they would lose. How does someone attain that level of excellence? It seems that there are certain mental qualities (committment, persistence, dedication, etc.) that are far rarer than certain physical qualities, and when you mix the two together, ever so rarely, you get someone like Tiger Woods or Lance Armstrong or Michael Jordan (though part of me hesitates to put Tiger on this list for some reason)
