Sports… the Philadelphia way

Ryan Howard Leads Phils to Sweep Padres

The Philadelphia Phillies completed a three game sweep of the lowly San Diego Padres, winning on Sunday 5-1. Ryan Howard was brilliant. The rookie had three hits, two doubles and an RBI and as good ol’ Charlie said it “he used the whole field and that’s how you become a much better hitter.” You’ve got to hand it to Howard and Utley for finding their groove so early in their major league lives.

You know what’s cool? Charlie Manuel has a strategy. I know it. He talked about it before the game. Bet you don’t believe it. Here it is: pitch the starters for six innings and hand it over to the bullpen. ”With our bullpen, we feel like we’re in good shape if that happens,” he said. Six innings seems a little short, but oh well. At least Manuel has a strategy;-) Maybe it will work better now that Worrell’s gone.

The Fight’ns got some help yesterday with both the Nationals and Braves losing their respective games. That puts them only three games out of both A) First place in the NL East and B) the wildcard.

Other points of note: 6 of 9 starters got hits. One of those starters was Brett Meyers who cranked a double with two outs and drove in a run to help his cause. Myers moves to 8-5 and maintains an impressive 3.24 ERA.
