Owens ready to leave Eagles…for Falcolns?
At this point, a trade may be the best option for both parties, and it actually seems to finally be on the radar:
Joe Banner takes a shot at Owens (you don’t say this to someone you expect to be part of your team next year):
“If we were dealing with somebody who was looking at this logically and was going to come to a common-sense conclusion, you’d say [he'll report to camp on time],” Banner told the Philadelphia Daily News. “But you’re dealing with two people here who, frankly, don’t think in common-sense terms. Anything can happen. They’re not going to necessarily do what makes sense.
Owens responded by saying:
“I don’t really have to play for the Eagles,” Owens told Comcast Sports Southeast. “I can go play for any other team and still be productive. If he [Banner] feels that way, then get rid of me,” Owens said regarding Banner’s statement. “I have no gripes, nothing, no ill feeling towards any of the players out there on that team. This is business. They know how business is conducted and I’ve told them, time-and-time, what I’m doing is for my family….Trade me. Release me. We can just part ways like adults. If I’ve got to come there it’s not going to be a good situation. I just want something to be rectified and we can just move on. If Joe Banner, who made that statement, can give Drew Rosenhaus the permission to seek a trade, who knows, Atlanta might be on the list of people I could play for.”
Owens has turned into a huge problem. The Eagles will probablyl stick to their guns and make him honor the contract. But in doing so, they will retain the cancer that he’s become and not do the radical surgery that’s necessary at this point. Even Owens recognizes that things have gone too far and that it wouldn’t feel right in Philadelphia: “If I’ve got to come there it’s not going to be a good situation. I just want something to be rectified and we can just move on.”
