Eagles and Draft Day: 19 Days
19 Days until draft day. What’s in store for the Eagles?
Because of great management, the Birds have 13 picks in this year’s draft. Five of those picks come in the first three rounds. This is virtually unprecedented among successful teams (especially teams that made it to the SuperBowl the previous year).
What should the Eagles do with their draft picks? Considering that their first pick is currently at 31, some have argued that the Eagles should trade up for better talent (since they’ve got so many picks to leverage with). However, there are also others who point out that in this year’s draft teams will get more bang for their buck in the late first round / early second round.
The Eagles need a big, strong, in-your-face, grind it up the middle rusher to compliment Westbrook. This should be their first priority in the draft. Next, the Eagles should look to keep their offensive and defensive lines strong for the future. You win games at the line of scrimage…the Eagles know this…and they will continue to build a steady stable of linemen. Next, I think the Eagles need to look for another BIG receiver (speed is not necessary). We need another reciever besides T.O. who can dominate the cornerbacks and draw double coverage. This position may be the most difficult to secure, but I think that the Eagles should consider trading up to do it.
Finally, I suspect that the Eagles will trade away some of their draft picks this year for picks in the future. The great thing about this organization is that they are not willing to gamble the future for the present (just look at the Redskins).
