Phillies Win Three Straight as Braves and Marlins Fall
Outside of losing two of three to the Marlins (and they should have won that series too), the Phillies have now managed to win three of four series matchups against first place teams. Not too shabby. And many of these games they are winning convincingly…like today’s game against the Braves which they took 12-5.
Lieber struggled but the closers gave us four shut-out innings. Polanco went a staggering 4 for 6. Burrell went 2 for 4 with 3 rbis. And the bottom of their lineup is even turning up the heat: the 6th, 7th and 8th batters got 2 hits each and added 7 rbis. Again, this is not too shabby. In fact, if its done consistently, this is the makings of an explosive offense that could carry the team into first place. When the bottom of your batting order is producing this well, it’s hard to lose.
Speaking of first place…the Phillies suddenly find themselves only 4 games out. The Braves have lost two straight. The Marlins have lost four straight. Things are looking good all of a sudden. Only time will tell whether this is just a blip in the radar or whether the Phillies really have the stuff to make a penant run. But let’s give credit where its due. They’ve now managed to go 7-4 against four first place teams in a row. They are stepping up at just the right time and maybe it will carry them through.
