Sports… the Philadelphia way

Obie out, Mo in!

Cheeks Hired O'Brien Fired

I was hoping to write a more general opinion piece to introduce myself to the blog, but instead I’ll make sure the breaking news gets out:

76ERS FIRE O’BRIEN AFTER ONE SEASON:
Jim O’Brien was fired Monday after one season as coach of the Philadelphia 76ers and replaced by former Portland Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks, one of the most popular players in Philadelphia’s franchise history.

O’Brien, a Philadelphia native who played for Saint Joseph’s, went 43-39 in his only season and the Sixers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

He was in the first year of a four-year contract that paid him about $4 million a year. O’Brien, though, was not very popular with his players — most notably former All-Star Chris Webber — who often complained about their roles.

Cheeks was one of the most popular 76ers from 1978-89 and played on Philadelphia’s last championship team, in 1983.

Alright BK, this better be the final piece that we need. There has been a suspicious lack of stability on the Sixers for many years now. Hopefully this trio of Cheeks, Iverson, and Webber can create a cohesive team and really threaten next season.

This is great news. Cheeks is the right guy, IMHO. He played in Philly, knows Philly, and loves Philly. He’s committed to doing things the right way. He knows basketball, fundamentals and all. I think he can get this team to play together, which is what they really need, right? When they played as a team, they showed flashes of brilliance, but it was just never consistent. Mo Cheeks can bring that consistency…at least I hope (read: another one of those Philadelphia fans who’s hopelessly hopeful).
