Phillies in a Funk
The Philadelphia Phillies can’t manufacture runs. And until they figure out how to score, they’ll keep losing.
Over the last two games, Placido Polanco has surprisingly been their only bright spot in terms of generating consistent hits. Burrell was already in a slump before he got injured.
Their first four batters are all hitting under .270 right now and it seems like they rarely get hot together. Usually, one guy has a good game and everyone else sputters. You can’t score runs that way.
Lieber actually pitched another good game, although he gave up two homers. Three runs isn’t a bad outing, and should normally be good enough for a win if your offense is generating the runs it should.
A while back we said that we weren’t quite sure which Phillies team was going to show up this year and the picture’s becoming clearer, though depressing. The Phillies have a mediocre to bad manager who can’t generate runs when he needs to and doesn’t know how to handle his bullpen. They’ve got two good starters in Lieber and Myers, but that’s not going to carry them. Their bullpen has actually improved and may turn out to be solid the rest of the year. But you know what, they offense is completely unpredictable, and for every explosive game they have, they have ten pathetic performances (they’ve barely been able to score a single run in most of their last eight games).
